I’m so shocked at how Yan Xia (Yan Pin’s sister) was able to pull the whole thing off without Yan Pin knowing a single detail of the surprise at all. To be able to coordinate 40 odd people into a room and getting everyone to keep hush hush about it requires patience, planning and skill. I suspect that Yan Xia *stole* Yan Pin’s phone at 2am in the morning to get all the contacts from her phone. Everyone received a 2am message about the dinner plans. Garh! Damn those 2am messages! >_>
Initially the venue was supposed to be at Grecos in Nedlands but since Yan Pin didn’t like Mediterranean food the venue got switched. Yan Xia asked Yan Pin where she wanted to have dinner and Yan Pin said she just wanted something simple... like Japanese in Applecross. The problem with that though... the venue wasn’t big enough for 40 people! So in the end, it got changed to Giardini’s in Leederville.
The majority of everyone got there on time and we were all able to witness Yan Pin walking through the curtains to the private room where we all surprised her and sang happy birthday to her. I think she must’ve been really really shocked since she was under the impression that it was going to be a small dinner with just her sister and brother.
I think it’s such a nice thing for her sister to have organised a surprise birthday for her. It’s so sweet. If you’ve never heard of Yan Pin’s stories of her high school days, maybe you should ask her to tell you about it – and once you know the background to it, you’ll understand why I think she would really appreciate all those who came despite many people having classes till 6pm and people working late – everyone still made it relatively on time – and I think it meant a lot to her.
So anyway, she didn’t end up spending much time talking to our side of the table which had me, Jill, Kiew, Tim, Ailin, Iris, Esther, Usha, Eunice, Leticia, Charlyn, Lawrence and Yan Jing but it was alright... it was nice for me to catch up with Jillian and all her funny stories about starting work. Every morning at 6am... I’ll be sleeping... but I’ll keep you in my dreams and think of you running to the bus stop... giggling to myself that I still get an extra hour’s sleep! We had a lot to talk about... shopping and our very lack there of office clothes, work work work... amongst other things.
I had the fettucine as I always do... I mean late night carbs are always a must! Then Jill had the grilled calamari, Tim had the seafood marinara and Kiew had the chicken penne... as for the rest of the table... well they were too far, but their food looked good too! The fettucine was alright – but still doesn’t beat Ciao Italia!
