the two Asian mentalities

The above picture is only for demonstration purposes. Do not be fooled, I did not go to this buffet!

Being Asian doesn't come easy. There's a lot that you need to learn and live up to, to be a TRUE BLUE Aussie Asian!!!

I believe Asians live by two "motto's" in life in regards to food.

1. Get your monies worth
2. Don't waste food

I suffer from both these Asian mentalities - I guess perhaps I've been taught well?

I suffer immensly every single time I go out for a buffet. I'm really lousy at buffets - I fail every single time. I get over-excited and gaga at the immense amount of food that I want to eat, and start getting too greedy. I pack on the plate with loads of carbs and things that will make you ultra full in the first instance. Wrong move.

The thing is, Asians are strategic. We're pretty smart when it comes to food. We strategically place certain items of food on the plate in a specific manner and order, in order to fill up every square millimetre on the plate with food - and by the time you're walking to your table... it looks like you've got a castle of food on your plate - fit to feed a whole family for a week!

By the time I get to the second plate, I can hardly move. My stomach is begging me to stop - but my brain says, YOU'RE ONLY ON THE FIRST PLATE YOU LOSER!!! GO GET ANOTHER! So my poor waist line has to stomach it down - it doesn't matter if I sit up straight, or hunch - the THREE tyres are still sitting around my waist!!!

And whilst I'm on my second plate and struggling, the second Asian motto comes into my mind. Don't waste food. SIEN... so after being greedy and kiasu and getting my second plate, after that I need to finish the food I took!

I don't like food wastage simply because we have an over-abundance of food to eat, whereas other third world countries are suffering and have nothing to eat. It's sad, but that's the way it is. So there I am... eating my second plate of food, struggling and putting myself under immense pressure to get the food down.

Why can't I just be content with one plate. WHY!?!?!?

So in the end I ate 2 slices of toast, 5 hashbrowns, 1 sausage, 2 serves of scrambled egg, 2 serves of sauteed mushrooms, 3 rashers of bacon, 1 small bowl of yoghurt and a cup of cappucino.

Kill me now. It's a God-send they didn't provide any pastries and the like... or else I wouldn't like to think how much I would have been able to golf down! To barf is an understatement.

PS: Just came back from Lancelin with the cellies. Was much fun and emo-ness. One year has passed since our Mandurah trip. Can't believe how fast time has passed - will blog about the trip later.

This was us one year ago!
